NEARBY ATTRACTIONS
Fish River Canyon
The Fish River Canyon, is located in the southern part of Namibia. It is the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles (160 km) long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.
The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia. It cuts deep into the plateau which is today dry, stoney and sparsely covered with hardy drought-resistant plants. The river flows intermittently, usually flooding in late summer; the rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools. At the lower end of the Fish River Canyon, the hot springs resort of Ai-Ais is situated.
Public view points are near Hobas, a camp site 70 km north of Ai-Ais. This part of the canyon is part of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The other 90km of this canyon is privately owned.
Ai-Ais Hot Springs
Hobas Lookout Point
Hobas Camp is located in the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, a national park that straddles South Africa and Namibia. It is located on the Namibian side, on the northern end of the spectacular Fish River Canyon. The camp is situated just 10km away from the main look-out point of the canyon, at the starting point of the world-renowned 90km Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail- an ideal position.
The Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world and the largest in Africa. At 160km long, 27km wide and almost 550m deep in some places, it is one of the main tourist attractions in this part of Namibia. Hobas offers shaded campsites, each with braai (barbecue) facilities, electrical points and taps. The communal ablution facilities have showers, toilets and wash basins. There are also chalets for those who don’t wish to camp. A swimming pool, restaurant and shop with basic supplies are available.
The camp is idealy situated for those wishing to do the famous multi-day Canyon Hike, but day hikes and walks are also possible. Several mammal species can be encountered in the canyon, including Mountain zebra, klipspringer and rarely, leopard.
Orange River
The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and the Orange River Basin extends extensively into Namibia and Botswana to the north. It rises in the Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho, flowing westwards through South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean.
The river forms part of the international borders between South Africa and Namibia and between South Africa and Lesotho, as well as several provincial borders within South Africa. Except for Upington, it does not pass through any major cities.
The Orange River plays an important role in the South African economy by providing water for irrigation, as well as hydro-electric power. The river was named by Robert Jacob Gordon after the Dutch Royal House. Other names include Gariep River, Groote River or Senqu River (used in Lesotho). The official name, however, is the Orange River.
